Product listings are critical sources of information for AI, whether they're on your website, in your help center, or on external platforms. When customers ask questions about specific products, features, pricing, or availability, the AI often pulls directly from these listings. Well-structured product information helps AI provide accurate, helpful responses.
Use consistent product names and descriptions
Every product should have one official name that you use everywhere. If you sell a "Wireless Charging Pad," don't also call it a "Wireless Charger," "Charging Station," or "Qi Charger" in different places. Pick one primary name and use it consistently across all your product listings, website pages, and help center articles.
Your product descriptions should also be consistent. If your website says a product has "24-hour battery life" but your help center says "all-day battery," the AI may provide ambiguous answers. Use identical language for key specifications and features across all sources.
Structure product information clearly and include detailed specifications
Organize product listings with a predictable structure that AI can easily parse. A clear product listing typically includes:
- Product name and clear category or type
- Brief description of what it is and what it does
- Key features or specifications
- Pricing and availability
- Compatible products or requirements (if applicable)
Use headings or labels for each section so AI can quickly locate specific information. "Features," "Specifications," "Price," and "Compatibility" are all clear section labels that help AI understand what information follows.
The more specific your product information, the better AI can answer detailed customer questions. Instead of saying "long battery life," specify "up to 24 hours of continuous use." Instead of "multiple color options," list "Available in black, white, navy, and gray."
For technical products, include relevant specifications like dimensions, weight, materials, power requirements, or connectivity options. Customers often ask specific questions like "Will this fit in a standard backpack?" or "Does this work with USB-C?" Detailed specifications help AI answer these questions accurately.
Keep pricing and availability current
Outdated pricing information is one of the most common sources of customer frustration. When you change a price, update it everywhere simultaneously—your website, product listings, help center, and any third-party platforms you sell on.
If a product is out of stock, temporarily unavailable, or discontinued, make sure this status is clearly indicated and consistent across all sources. AI can only provide accurate availability information if your listings are current.
Link related products and resources
When relevant, link to related products, compatibility information, or setup guides. These connections help AI understand product relationships and provide more comprehensive answers. If someone asks about accessories for a specific product, clear linking helps AI recommend compatible options.
